Sport24.co.za | Chiefs suffer home loss to Clever Boys

Cape Town – Kaizer Chiefs suffered 3-1 a home defeat to Wits in Tuesday’s Absa Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

It was the visitors who came out the stronger in the opening 20 minutes of the match as defender Thulani Hlatshwayo came into an advanced position and saw his shot shave the wrong side of the post in the early exchanges.

With that said, Chiefs responded not long after as the lively Ramahlwe Mphahlele sent in a cross which Leo Castro sent wide from a header.

Nonetheless, midfielder Deon Hotto scored a goal-of-the-season contender in the 23rd minute as his strike from over 30 yards gave Itumeleng Khune little chance.

Castro found the leveler not long afterward in the 33rd minute as he got his head on the end of a Khama Billiat cross from a set piece.

Just before the break, Castro nearly made it 2-1 but he saw his effort go just wide from a low cross. However, the impressive Clever Boys regained the advantage through Terrence Dzvukamanja in the 43rd minute.

Following a superb cross from Sifiso Hlanti off the left, the Zimbabwean headed home beyond a stranded Khune with a magnificent header low down to the keeper’s right.

In the 47th minute the situation worsened for coach Giovanni Solinas’ men as they went 3-1 behind. After stunning work from Hotto, Gift Motupa showed composure to finish beyond Khune with a smart strike.

Eric Mathoho came close to a response with a header while Billiat fired just wide in the closing stages as well but it’s now just one point from a possible six at the start of the season for Chiefs.
