Joe Root’s illness is only minor and has ‘plenty of time’ to recover for third Test against South Africa, suggests Jos Buttler

Joe Root has ‘plenty of time’ to recover for England’s third Test against South Africa despite falling ill this weekend, claims Jos Buttler.

The England captain was absent from their training session on Sunday with illness leading to fears he may not be available for the match, which starts on Thursday.

It’s the latest setback on a tour for England which has stunted by injury, illness or both to many of the squad members.

But his teammate eased any fears England fans may have about Root’s availability, suggesting it’s only a minor illness.

Buttler told talkSPORT’s Andrew McKenna: “It’s been a bit chaotic the tour, hasn’t it? Especially the first couple of weeks and we thought we were probably through it now.

“Our captain isn’t feeling too well now but luckily we’ve got a few days before that Test starts so he’ll have plenty of time to get his work in.

“I haven’t been on a tour where there’s been so much illness. It’s frustrating.”

England are in a pretty good position in the four-match series despite all these setbacks, however.

The series is currently locked at 1-1 with England winning the second Test in Cape Town thanks to Ben Stokes’ inspired performance on the final day.

And Buttler said he and his teammates are feeling confident going into the clash in Port Elizabeth.

He added: “It’s huge for both teams. It’s set up brilliantly being 1-1 in the series and coming here full of confidence.

“A lot of guys can take confidence through playing really well at Cape Town and it’s sure to be another great Test.”
