Jadon Sancho’s celebration, Tom Brady’s trousers and Tyson Fury’s Denzel Washington request – Things we loved this week in sport

Although sport as we know it may no longer be a regular occurrence, the wheels are being set in motion to give fans their weekly dose of pain and ecstasy.

While organisations like the UFC and the Bundesliga have already safely orchestrated the return of live action without fans, the world is still waiting to get back to a semblance of normality.

That does not mean to say a few things from the world haven’t caught our eye. Check out the things we loved from the past week in the world of sport…

Jadon Sancho was among the Bundesliga players to send powerful anti-racism messages as protests rage across the world, with the England international saying ‘we shouldn’t fear speaking out for what’s right’ following the death of George Floyd.

Mr Floyd died last Monday after a white police officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck until he stopped breathing in Minneapolis in the United States.

Thousands marched across London in a Black Lives Matter demonstration on Sunday as protests continued around the world in the wake of the latest death of an African-American in police custody.

Sancho was among those in the Bundesliga – the only major league to have so far returned to action amid the coronavirus crisis – to use his platform to call for change.

‘Justice for George Floyd’ was scrawled on the t-shirt revealed by the Borussia Dortmund winger after scoring the first of what proved to be his maiden senior hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Paderborn.

Sancho, who was booked for removing his shirt, was part of the England squad that was subjected to sickening racist abuse in last year’s Euro 2020 qualifiers in Montenegro and Bulgaria.

He posted on Instagram: “Solid performance from the team!!

“Delighted to get my first career hat trick, a bittersweet moment personally as there are more important things going on in the world today that we must address and help make a change.

“We shouldn’t fear speaking out for what’s right, we have to come together as one & fight for justice. We are stronger together! #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd”

BRADY’S PANTS

NFL legend Tom Brady would have been ecstatic when he holed from the fairway whilst playing with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson – only to rip his trousers.

The Match, a charity event which saw Brady team up with Mickelson to take on Woods and Peyton Manning, provided plenty of highlights, but the best moment came on the seventh hole.

Brady, the six-time SuperBowl winner who recently joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had been taking plenty of stick from the likes of Charles Barkley and Brooks Koepka on social media following some below-par golf up to that point.

But he fired back in stunning fashion by spinning a wedge back into the hole for eagle from about 110 yards out.

However, his woes returned when he bent over to collect the ball, with cameras revealing a hilarious split in his trousers.

TALKING TYSON

Tyson Fury is in talks with Hollywood producers about a story of his life being portrayed on the big screen.

However, the ‘Gypsy King’ is adamant movie legend Denzel Washington is the man to play him.

Fury told BT Sport: “I’ve got a movie coming. I’m in talks with Hollywood movie directors now for the Tyson Fury life story.

“They asked me, ‘Who would you want to play you?’ I said, ‘Obviously Denzel.’

“Everybody had a bit of a laugh at that. We’ll have to finalise who’s gonna be the actor.

“I’m not too sure he can do the husky voice though, he needs a punch in the throat for that one.”

HARRY’S HEROICS

Despite magical Champions League nights, FA Cup winning performances and watching *that* Paolo Di Canio volley, Harry Redknapp told talksPORT his favourite football memories are with Portsmouth.

Between playing and managing Redknapp’s career has spanned over 50 years to date, with the legendary boss recently revealing that he’s interested in buying a lower-league club as he puts plans to retire on hold.

Redknapp, 73, has also enjoyed success off the field, stealing the nation’s hearts when he won ITV’s popular reality series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2018.

But when it comes to Redknapp’s most memorable season in football, it’s his first spell at Portsmouth which is the one that stands out from the rest – and given the magnitude of the task he had you can understand why.

After initially arriving at Fratton Park as director of football in the summer of 2001, Redknapp was later tasked with the top job in March of the following year and steered Pompey to first division safety.
